Husband and wife team Lisa and Danny are the brains behind Essex-based Punk It Up- a family business selling fabulous up-cycled wooden furniture, homemade and vintage furniture from Bali. What started as a regular family holiday to the Indonesian island quickly inspired a business idea for the couple, as they fell in love with the spirit, people and culture of the idyllic island.

And so in 2016, graffiti artist Lisa and carpenter Danny combined their creative flair and technical skill to launch Punk It Up- an online shop brimming with colourful furniture pieces. From cupboards transformed from Balinese oil drums to mirrors made from exquisite Teak boat wood, vibrantly painted cabinets and drift wood adorned with blown glass to make vases. Their furniture is unusual, noticeable and rich with the spirit of Bali and its craftspeople.

No wonder then that Punk It Up already has a loyal fan base. From customers looking to bring some unusual colour and style into their home interiors, to businesses seeking cool, rustic furniture with a story. Lisa’s already furnished trendy Shoreditch Bars and Stately Homes alike with her bespoke designs.

But how easy is it to incorporate this vibrant furniture style into your own home or business?

Punk It Up

1. Focus on a single room. Before buying the first thing that catches your eye, consider the practicalities. Which rooms in your home lack a focal point? Punk It Up can also create unique furniture for kids bedrooms, or bespoke pieces to add wow- factor to any lacklustre dining room or office.

2. Select an item. Do you need a mirror for that tricky gap in the hallway, a side cabinet for cutlery? Looking for a diverting bookshelf to enhance your work space? If they haven’t already created what you’re looking for, Lisa and Danny can design and create the perfect, bespoke item to suit your needs. They’ve even branched into making gorgeous one-off beaded lighting designs.

3. Colour palette. Don’t be afraid of colour! The vibrant colours of Bali display themselves proudly on Punk It Up’s furniture. From warm turquoises to fluro pinks, dusty reds, lemon yellows and luscious greens, these pieces will bring a smile to your face every time you look at them. Have fun picking out something in a shade you love that will work harmoniously with your existing interior.

4. Large or small? Punk It Up import vintage and hand-crafted furniture pieces from Bali and up cycled them using specialist painting and carpentry techniques. No two pieces are the same and they come in a range of shapes, sizes and prices. Consider a large, eye-catching shelving unit made from Teak for a larger space in need of an anchor or choose a small artisanal mirror to lift a guest bathroom.

5. Positioning. The Balinese are spiritual people and firm practisers of Feng Shui i.e. Encouraging good fortune through furniture placement! Colour plays an important role. Something red by the front door brings good luck. A round mirror will bounce light and good chi energy into dark corners. Choose one of Punk It Up’s vibrant pieces of reclaimed Balinese furniture and pour positive energy into your home or work space!
